Art is as much a process as it is an object, it is as much as how we create it, as it is what we create. It starts with an idea. My ideas come from both within and without. Most of my artistic talent with plasma or water jet cutting lies in my ability and skill in translating details of an image or sketch into a medium that is flat but has depth and mass. The medium and process has physical limitations that have to be observed.
With the "idea" in mind, we establish our intent. We then apply a philosophy called "design intent". This is a process of "design and refine" that starts by asking the questions of what? how? and why? in order to more fully define the purpose and function of the object. With this information, we can more fully determine the methods and materials with which the item will be made. Typically, with artistic endeavors this "intent" forces questions, like how to display? Color? Indoors or out? Structure? Material? Finish? It’s this process of questioning and refinement that results in the finished product.
I was born to make things...as well as fix them. I was born and lived on the East Coast as a kid, in the Midwest as a young man, later moving to Washington nearly a decade ago. I had already started well into my CAD and artistic endeavors by this time, but I was missing some much-needed life and work experience. I started working with my family's marine engineering company as a technician, where I continued to grow my problem-solving and design skills and abilities, especially with CAD tools.
As a pastime, I began to make many signs, other art objects and plasma or water-jet cut parts for my friends and family. I eventually grew impatient with the pace of large scale engineering projects and moved onto marine construction and rigging, as well as basic vessel operation and maintenance. After three years of vessel work. I transitioned into motorcycles professionally as a fabricator for DMC Side Cars, operating their plasma table. About a year later, I became the shop foreman, overseeing side car rig fabrication, installations and steering modifications.
While I have produced jet cut art and parts for many years, only recently have I felt that I have matured sufficiently as an artist and fabricator to pursue it full time, and I have now began to show and sell my art and skills.
